Organic Wines

These wines are made from grapes grown in organic vineyards, and are processed using methods that keep chemical intervention to a minimum, meaning that they are made from grapes which are cultivated without recourse to synthetic fungicides, herbicides or fertilizers.
To produce a quality organic wine, it is imperative that the base product is sound and that organically-grown grapes have a head start because they are not in a cycle of chemical dependency.
In vineyards where the environment is respected and biodiversity encouraged, the vines grow in a living soil, full of worms and bacteria. This enables them to draw upon the optimum levels of minerals from the soil. In turn, these healthy vines develop better resistance to disease and go on to produce fruit for years to come.
Sulphates have to be used while grapes are being grown in order to protect them from fungal attacks and to stabilise wine in the bottle. Technically this means that these wines are not fully organic. This is true with both conventional and organic production. The only difference is that when making organic wines the producers will make more attempts to use as little sulphates as possible.

Many claim that organic does not encourage next day hangovers and they believe the reason for this is the lower levels of sulphur. To date none have been able to come into agreement as to what this type of wine really is. The best advice that can be given pertaining to organic wines is to examine the labels that are on the wine bottles and see if you can make a determination that indeed organic grapes are the main component.

Many events that are catered will ask for organic to be served. This is an area that caterers will need knowledge of in order to offer a professional menu to their clients. Especially now that organic products are becoming more and more popular, organic is going to have to be offered as part of all products and services. Believe it or not, grapes top the list of the most chemically sprayed produce. They are sprayed with insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. This is likely why so many are seeking organic style wines. Many also believe that these wines offer more flavour and more distinct character and at times a noticeable cost-savings on the bottom line.

Although there is a lot of controversy surrounding Organic Wines, people who produce the wine (or grow organic grapes) do so out of a sincerely held belief that what they are doing is better than if they had produced the same grapes and wine conventionally. Organic growers do it because they believe it.
